With a $221 million domestic opening over five days, “Moana 2” sets a record for the highest Thanksgiving box office.

This year’s Thanksgiving box office was all feast and no famine. The five-day Thanksgiving weekend saw the highest box office receipts in movie history thanks to the combination of Disney’s “Moana 2,” Universal’s “Wicked,” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II”—an estimated $420 million as of Sunday.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore state

“A perfect storm of Thanksgiving box office, powered by a trio of films from the musical, epic drama, and family film genres, has arrived at the most advantageous moment to reinvigorate the theatrical marketplace after a post-summer malaise,”.

With $221 million over the course of five days, “Moana 2” topped the box office, significantly above the $100 million analysts had first projected. It set a new record for Thanksgiving weekend box office receipts, surpassing the $125 million earned by 2019’s “Frozen II.”

“Wicked” kept rising, with an anticipated $117.5 million in Christmas ticket sales, increasing its total domestic revenue to $262.42 million. At the domestic box office, it has become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation ever. After ten days in theaters, the movie has made $359.2 million worldwide.

“Gladiator II” increased the Thanksgiving total by $44 million. In its first ten days in theaters, it has brought in an estimated $111.2 million in domestic ticket sales, and since launching overseas earlier this month, it has brought in $320 million worldwide.

Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory said in a statement

“There is no shortage of words to describe the historic weekend we’ve seen unfold at movie theaters,”.

“When one film exceeds expectations in the way ‘Moana 2’ has, that alone is a big story. When fellow tentpole films like ‘Wicked’ and ‘Gladiator II’ excel at the same time, it’s a powerful reminder of the importance moviegoing continues to hold in our culture.”

Comscore data shows that the Thanksgiving holiday haul hasn’t also crossed $200 million since 2019. And only one Thanksgiving time had exceeded $300 million before this weekend.
