Amazon and Orbital Collaborate To Eliminate CO2 From The Atmosphere At One Of Its Data Centers

Due to AI’s increasing power requirements, a number of large tech companies run the risk of breaking their climate pledges. However, an AWS data center is being used as a test site for a new substance that extracts carbon dioxide from the environment in collaboration with Amazon and Orbital, an AI business.

Creating enough airflow to allow the sorbent material to extract a significant volume of carbon dioxide is one of the largest expenses associated with carbon capture. Given that their cooling systems move vast volumes of air to maintain the ideal temperatures for hundreds of servers, data centers appear like the ideal location for the implementation of such a technology.

As part of their agreement with AWS, Orbital Materials will store its materials at an unidentified data center. The additional cost of the material should be far lower than the cost of a carbon offset, and the configuration should eliminate more carbon dioxide than the data center’s power would produce.

Orbital’s models can produce a variety of potential materials, such as batteries, semiconductors, and other devices. The firm specializes in leveraging AI to build new materials. However, it is currently focusing on carbon capture. The material that AWS will use was created especially to deal with the hot air that emanates from data centers. The business refused to provide more information regarding the unique substance.
