With funding from a16z, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is starting an AI company.
The startup company Stem AI is currently in stealth. This public document shows it was incorporated in June 2023. This filed for a trademark in August 2023. An incorporation form submitted to the California Secretary of State earlier this year names Shear as CEO.
According to the trademark application, Stem AI is creating software that will enable AI to comprehend and collaborate with human behavior, preferences, biology, morals, and ethics. According to the Pitchbook, Andreessen Horowitz became an investor in the firm in August.

Adam Goldstein, who founded the travel search and booking website Hipmunk, is one of the co-founders of Stem AI. Goldstein became a visiting partner at Y Combinator after selling Hipmunk to Concur in 2016. He also established an incubator called Astonishing Labs to support bioresearch.
Shear declined to discuss many details of Stem AI’s intentions when asked for comment. An email question was not immediately answered by Goldstein.
However, Shear has expressed his opinions on AI design, safety, and regulation on social media in recent months.
