According to insiders, Meta intends to construct a $10 billion global subsea cable.

The second-largest global generator of internet usage is Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Its properties and billions of users make up 22% of all mobile traffic along with 10% of all fixed traffic. Meta’s initiatives in AI have the potential to increase that usage much more. Therefore, Meta is taking matters into its own hands to ensure that it will have dependable infrastructure to serve that business.

The idea is still in its early phases, according to people close to Meta, who confirmed it. Plans have been outlined, but no tangible assets have been provided, and they refused to talk about the money. It is anticipated that Meta will discuss it more openly in early 2025 when it will confirm the cable’s plans, including its capacity, proposed path, and some of the justifications for its construction.

If the plan is implemented, it will take years before it is completely functional because the few businesses that can develop the infrastructure, like SubCom, already have big clients, like Google, using their services.

Ranulf Scarborough said

“There’s a real tight supply on cable ships,”

“They’re expensive at the minute and booked out several years ahead. Finding the available resources to do it soon is a challenge.”

When the cable is finished, Meta will have a dedicated channel for international data traffic. According to sources, the cable’s current planned route would see it form a “W” shape around the world, as shown here by Tagare, from the east coast of the United States to India via South Africa and then to the west coast of the United States from India to Australia.
