Numerous accounts on X imitate real-life public personalities, including politicians, athletes, and artists. Because some accounts use the word “parody” in their display names and others in their profiles, some people—including news anchors—mistake them for legitimate accounts.

A few app reverse engineers claim that in order to make it easier for parody or fan commentary accounts to recognize themselves as such, the platform is creating a new label for them.

Users will see a “Parody account” label beneath the username on the profile page and on their posts if the company implements the label and parody accounts use it. As a result, it is less likely that someone will mistake a post from a parody account for one from a real person.

Forcing spoof accounts to add the label to their profiles may be the platform’s most challenging task. As of right now, X’s authenticity policy includes a section on parody accounts, requesting that they abide by the platform’s guidelines against attempting to propagate false information by impersonating other users.

 The policy statement said

“We allow compliant Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) accounts on X only if the purpose is to discuss, satirize or share information,” 

X will also need to establish a policy regarding the possible requirements for satirical accounts to take the new label if it is implemented. Users will become puzzled if a significant portion of parodies do not include this label.

Interestingly, automated bot accounts that automatically post updates using the social network’s API already have a label on X. Not all bot accounts, nevertheless, adhere to these guidelines and use a label. There have been numerous reports of malicious actors controlling election-related narratives with bot accounts by utilizing various automation approaches.
